What is cloud computing? - Part I

CloudComputing where is it?

Cloud Computing, or Cloud Computing in Spanish, is also known as cloud services, cloud computing or concepts cloud. For ordinary users, it is a daily thing without realizing it. Services such as Gmail, Hotmail, Dropbox, or any email service is Cloud Computing. In short, to define it correctly, are the set of computer services through a network, which is usually the Internet.

When dealing with services, since it is called many times the new model for the provision of business and technology services, it allows the user to access a catalog of services, respond with them to the needs of their business, in a flexible and adaptive way, solving the case of unforeseeable demands or peak work and paying only for the consumption used at all times. There are even providers that offer free services that are financed through advertising or non-profit organizations.

What can you do for me?

Cloud computing allows a high degree of automation, a rapid mobilization of resources and a high capacity to adapt to meet a variable demand. Also an advanced virtualization and a flexible price according to the consumption made; all this supported on a dynamic technological infrastructure that also avoids the fraudulent use of software and piracy.

The concept of "Cloud Computing" is very broad and includes almost all possible types of services based on the network. Thus, when companies offer a service in the cloud, they usually refer to one of these three modalities: the SaaS or Software as a Service, Software as a Service; PaaS or Platform as a Service, Platform as a Service; and the IaaS or Infrastructure as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service. Generating in this way benefits for both providers, who can offer, more quickly and efficiently, a greater number of services. And for the users, who have the possibility to access it, enjoying the transparency and immediacy of the system and a business model of payment for consumption.

When did it start?

As I said at the beginning, for everyday users it may seem that we are not part of this evolution, but nothing is further from reality. From the beginning, the big Internet service providers, such as Google, Amazon AWS, Microsoft and others, saw that it was much easier to control their own infrastructure than to do ever more powerful programs backed by customers. In this way, a system of horizontally distributed resources emerged, introduced as virtual IT services with the capabilities to be scaled massively and managed as resources configured and pooled in a continuous manner.

And how are we now?

Today we are seeing the same trend globalizing at all levels. Utility equipment is mutating into mere presenters of information stored in large quantities by service providers. In business circles, the 'all in house' model is also being changed from 'pay per use'. To make very large expenditures on machinery, pure iron, not to waste a single euro on infrastructures that can become obsolete in a time unfortunately shorter than expected. 'Live up to date' with the assurance that we have the necessary resources at all times and we are able to increase or reduce them according to our needs. All this with the assurance that they will never be outdated and they are being managed by professionals 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Leaving us and our workers, no less important, to focus on OUR / HIS job.

And for today we leave it here, to focus on our work, next week we will talk a little more about the advantages and disadvantages of Cloud Computing and some other thing ;)

Regards!
