What are control panels (based on Linux): Plesk, cPanel, etc...

by SW Team

Very often, when dealing with or managing our services at a web hosting provider, we come across the term Control Panel, which leads us to ask ourselves: What is a control panel and what does it consist of? What are some of the control panels I can make use of?

In this article we will analyze these questions and give more details about linux based control panels.

Are you interested in trying everything you can manage with our own SWPanel control panel integrated in our products? We recommend you to take a look at our hosting solution.

What is a Control Panel?

The services required to operate a web site or an e-mail account are quite complex. These services are made up of numerous interconnected pieces of software, which together are often referred to as a “stack”. For example, the most widely used stack in the world for web services is known as LAMP, which refers to the initials of its main components: Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.

However, manually configuring and administering this type of environment is a complex task and, in case of error, it can jeopardize the integrity of our system. How can we manage it in a simple way? With a Control Panel.

A Control Panel is a tool with a graphical interface designed to facilitate the management of your hosting or server settings in a simple and intuitive way. Thanks to its graphical interface, it is possible to perform tasks that seem simple, but would otherwise require extensive knowledge of Linux.

What is a Control Panel?

As we have already mentioned, it is a graphical interface that connects directly to your server, and it consists of a repository of multiple tools that allow you to manage different aspects of your hosting service and/or your servers.

Some of the functions that a control panel normally integrates ar:

  • Visitor statistics
  • Details on resources used (cpu, ram memory, disk space, bandwidth, etc...)
  • Files and directories administration
  • FTP server user account management
  • Configuration of e-mail accounts
  • Administration of databases and their users
  • Access to server/hosting log files
  • Domain management
  • DNS management
  • SSL certificate management
  • Backup configuration

What types of control panels are there?

There are two different types of control panels, these are the Integrated Panel type and the Independent Panel type. Let's analyze them below:

Integrated Panel

An integrated panel (such as our SWPanel) is an interface exclusive to a specific provider (such as SWHosting). This type of panel has the advantage of being specifically designed in conjunction with the infrastructure and market it serves, making it highly optimized and fully integrated.

It provides a superior user experience, as everything is handled from a single interface, without the need to switch methods to perform different tasks, such as reviewing invoices or managing domains. A well-integrated dashboard is less confusing for users, and translates into a consistent, simpler and more intuitive user experience for the customer.

Independent Panel

On the other hand, there are standalone or generic panels. Common examples are Plesk or CPanel, software companies that develop control panels that manage the LAMP stack. Simultaneously, another software company such as WHMCS takes care of the administrative part.

The integration between them can vary, meaning that one, the other, both or neither could manage domain registration. The main advantage, however, is their wide availability, since it is easy to find vendors that offer these solutions in conjunction with their products.

Why did SW Hosting opt for an integrated panel?

Although it is true that opting for an independent panel can be more comfortable for a hosting provider, and can offer a familiar use to customers who have already worked with the most common control panels, at SW Hosting we want to offer an optimal and intuitive experience to all types of customers, with or without experience.

With this in mind, we make use of SWPanel as an integrated control panel that counts with the development, evolution, and experience of 24 years in production and constant improvement.

Today, it offers our customers a large number of functions that more than cover the needs of any hosting service, and even provides more advanced tools to customize, configure, and work directly on private servers without the need to access them, or make use of intricate command lines.

In addition, being a constantly evolving panel, it offers a simple experience while still making use of the latest technologies on the market that are progressively integrated to its already available functions.
