Ubuntu 20.04 now available in all our Clouds

by SW Team

We are happy to announce the release of the latest Ubuntu Extended Support release: “Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)”. From now on, all our customers can deploy their Cloud with this version of the GNU / Linux distribution, Ubuntu.

What is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)?
It is the last stable version of extended support of the Ubuntu distribution and it succeeds the stable version “Ubuntu 19.10”. Thanks to the availability of Ubuntu 20.04 in all Cloud instances, now, you can work with more updated repositories and, therefore, with more recent versions of your favorite software, libraries and applications or that you require for your project.

Why the number in Ubuntu versions?
Ubuntu publishes a new version of the operating system twice a year: XX.04, in April and XX.10, in October. The version corresponds to the year number and month of its publication: 19.04 (April 2019), 19.10 (October 2019), 20.04 (April 2020)… Sometimes they have been delayed, but they have kept the nomenclature «.04» and «.10».

In addition, every two years (even-numbered years), Ubuntu publishes its LTS version, which stands for «Long Term Support». The suffix «LTS» indicates or limits the number of months Ubuntu will maintain and release security updates for that version.

  • Non-LTS versions: will be «supported» (updates) up to 9 months after publication.
  • The LTS versions: will have «support» (updates) up to 2 years after their publication (previously it was 3 years, having reached 5 years in the Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS version).

What's new in Ubuntu 20.04?
Ubuntu 20.04 comes with two outstanding novelties on which many of its changes are based. These news are:

  • The graphical environment, GNOME 3.36.
  • The kernel, which now uses Linux 5.4.

If you are using Ubuntu for development, toolchain updates should be good news. Focal Fossa ships with new versions:

  • glibc 2.31
  • OpenJDK 11
  • rustc 1.41
  • GCC 9.3
  • Python 3.8.2
  • ruby 2.7.0
  • php 7.4
  • perl 5.30
  • golang 1.13.

This latest version of Ubuntu also includes recent versions of many major applications:
